Directions

  1. Rinse the fresh cranberries under cold water and remove any damaged or shriveled ones. Drain them well.

  2. In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the cranberries, granulated sugar, water, orange zest and cinnamon sticks in a pan.

  3. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir the mixture to dissolve the sugar. Continue cooking and stirring until the cranberries start to burst, and the mixture comes to a boil. This should take about 5-10 minutes.

  4. Once the cranberries have burst and the sauce has thickened slightly, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for another 5-10 minutes. Continue stirring occasionally.

  5. Taste the sauce and adjust the sweetness if needed by adding more sugar to your liking. Keep in mind that cranberry sauce should have a balance of sweet and tart flavors.

  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the cranberry sauce cool to room temperature. It will thicken further as it cools.

  7. Once the cranberry sauce has cooled, you can transfer it to a serving dish and remove the cinnamon sticks.

  8. Cranberry sauce can be served immediately or stored in the refrigerator for several days before serving. It can also be made ahead of time and reheated before serving.
