Directions

  1. Preparation: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

  2. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with the sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. This can take about 3-5 minutes using an electric mixer on medium speed.

  3. Add Egg and Vanilla: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.

  4. Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the butter mixture, beating on low speed just until combined.

  5. Form Cookies: Depending on your preference, you can do the following:

    • For Slice-and-Bake: Shape the dough into one or two logs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. After chilling, slice the logs into 1/4-inch thick rounds.
    • For Shaped Cookies: Take small amounts of dough and roll into balls. Place on the baking sheet and press down with a fork to flatten slightly.
    • For Cookie Press: If you have a cookie press, you can use it to shape cookies directly onto the baking sheet.
  6. Decorate: If you're using any toppings like sprinkles, chocolate chips, or nuts, add them to the tops of the cookies now.

  7. Bake: Place the cookies in the preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden. Remember that baking times can vary depending on the size and thickness of your cookies.

  8. Cool: Once baked, remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes. Transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
